Since we were all huge fans of pizza, we innovated with some recipes that were healthier and with a lower footprint!
During our summer program students of Grades 1 and 2 were working on exploring Global Goal 13 of Climate Action and achieving target 13.3, build knowledge and capacity to meet. climate change.
Through experiments, theater, stories, and drawings we explored the ecological footprint that we leave on water, soil, air, and waste. We were delighted to learn that some of the children were already aware of how important it is to take care of water and air. As we dove deeper, students were astonished to learn how climate change is also related to activities like watching television, leaving the lights on, and the food we consume.
We worked all week on activities that invited us to evaluate and evolve our ecological footprint. The more challenging parts were to reevaluate our time using electronic devices and diversifying our diet. Since we were all huge fans of pizza, we innovated with some recipes that were healthier and with a lower footprint!
Although we had quite a challenge, students maintained their excitement throughout the week. Instead of giving up or being taken away by anger and frustration, students happily recognized that they are responsible for the impacts of their actions on the Planet. One of the first graders decided to play less on his smartphone that week, so he could reduce the footprint that resulted from consuming electricity.
Students not only left with more ideas on how to take care of the planet: they also became educators of ecological footprints for others!
